We receive questions all the time about the effectiveness and practicality of administering CBD to pets instead of humans. From furry feline pals to man’s best friend, the bond and relationship we share with our pets are a huge part of our everyday lives, and thus, a critical piece in our emotional and psychological well being. Today, we take a look into the world of CBD for pets, and make some critical recommendations for those looking to start helping ease the pain and anxiety for their four-legged friends.
What is CBD pet-care? Many people aren’t aware of how massive (and growing) the CBD pet-care market has become, especially as more and more areas legalize the growth and sale of CBD products. As you might expect, CBD for pets comes in many of the same forms you would see in their human counterparts. Edibles (such as chew treats), oils and ointments are still the three main ways to administer CBD to a pet, and each offers a distinct set of properties that differ depending on the situation. Again, like their human sidekicks, pets seem to take the highest levels of CBD through oil-based solutions, while edibles are often weaker in effect and take longer to enter the bloodstream. But why would we want to give our pets CBD? And what will it do for them?
Why give your pet CBD? Studies have shown that CBD can help increase comfort and activities in dogs and cats with osteoarthritis and a number of other bone and muscle conditions. Some researchers have also found that CBD may help reduce the number of seizures in epileptic pets as well. While we can’t fully grasp the impact CBD has on an animal’s body and it’s receptiveness to pain, we do know that it is a safe and effective way to decrease discomfort and pain for the aging animal body, just like a human. Often times, veterinarians do not have natural and available drugs that can ease pain and help your pet like CBD supplements can. Another massive benefit to remember when using CBD on your pets is the lack of harmful side effects that you need not worry about when giving your beloved pet medication or prescription drugs. Of course, as always, consult with your veterinarian to make sure that your furry friend is a good candidate for CBD therapy.
Is CBD really safe for animals? First and foremost, like the human body, CBD in its purest state offers, should not harm. However, this does not mean that cheap or improperly made CBD supplements should be viewed in the same light. Your pet’s body is smaller and more susceptible to change than your human body, and will be more sensitive to cheaply manufactured CBD than we would. Assuming you do use natural and pure CBD on your pet, you can expect it to aid with anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation and anxiety.
But what about side-effects? Side-effects from proper CBD use on your pets is possible but usually limited in scope. Several studies have found that pets who exhibit side-effects to using CBD had:
Dry mouth: Research has shown that CBD can decrease the production of saliva. For dogs and cats, this would manifest as increased thirst.
Drowsiness: Pet owners have used CBD to treat anxiety. The calming effect of CBD can also cause slight drowsiness, especially when using higher doses.
Lowered blood pressure: High doses of CBD have been known to cause a temporary drop in blood pressure in pets. Even though the drop is small, it might create a brief feeling of light-headedness and unease.
It is important to remember that the full research of CBD for pets is still on-going, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved CBD or issued a dosing chart. Never forget that any medication or supplement carries the risk of a reaction, and it is always advisable to start out with small amounts and closely monitor the effects they have on your pet when administered. Always check with your vet first!
